Maui and The Sun - Visual Art/Maori Legends

Recently in Ahuriri...

We read the story and watched a clip from You Tube about the Maori legend "How Maui Slowed the Sun"

We looked carefully at the expression, koru patterns and colours that the illustrator used to draw the sun.

We experimented with vivid markers and pastel crayons to try and get bright colours and a heavy covering on our paper plates.

We learned to use a pencil to curl strips of paper for the rays.
These are now display in our Whanau space.

What a great way to brighten up our winter days!

Cross country and virtual reality

We held our cross country event this week after several weeks of training.
We really enjoyed the afternoon.

Here we are waiting to go!

Mrs.Zelas set us off on our adventure.

Leo's Dad and Mum brought in some really cool equipment: Virtual reality goggles!
We got to explore space during Discovery Time - it was AMAZING!
They kindly left a set at school so we can continue travelling through the stars!

Shadows

For science we have been learning about shadows; how they are made and why they change.

Max C explained to us how shadows are made. "Our bodies block the sun and then it makes a shadow."

Today our poem was about our shadows and how they are attached to us. We went outside and worked with some friends to draw around the shadows our bodies made.

" I had a short shadow with a happy face" Alijah

" I liked making actions to draw around" Greta

Dog Safety

The Christchurch City Council Dog Safety Education Team visited us this week.  We met Indie the dog and learned lots about being a responsible dog owner, how to approach dogs safely and what to do when a dog is on its own.

What we learned:

"If the dog is on its own then leave it alone!"
Max C

"Ask the owner if you can stroke it"
Mia

"A dog needs a collar and a tag"
Emma K

"If you own a dog you must pick up its poo!"
 Carter D

"When you pat a dog, first you make a fist and let them sniff you"
