Our New Quiet Room

This week we changed our small break out room into a "Quiet Zone".  We have created a comfortable space where we can read books, draw, write or use the felt boards.  The most important thing is they have to be QUIET! The children have loved this area and many of them choose to work in there.

Imogen, Mya and Amelia demonstrate how to use the quiet room by reading to their doll.

On Monday, all of our new pupils were welcomed into the Halswell School Community.  It was lovely to see so many parents able to attend the welcome.

The children loved the Kapa Haka group and were a shining example  of how to sing the waiata Te Aroha.  They sounded absolutely beautiful.  The invitation to hongi was also accepted by many of the children.  As we left, the children were given pieces of apple to share.  It was a great time and lovely to see how many new pupils were starting at Halswell School throughout the whole school.

Mrs Edwards and Nathan show how to hongi.

Welcome, welcome , Haere mai!

Put on your funky feet and your wiggly hips, and you'll be ready to groove with Ahuriri!
Our welcome to all our families who visited during our learning team afternoon tea.

Thank you to the emergency services

This week Christchurch has come together again as a strong supportive community. This time to endure the Port Hills fires. Today at school we expressed our gratitude to the emergency services and helicopter pilots.

We dressed up as emergency workers and heroes, raising money for the family of Steve Askin who lost his life fighting the fires:

We made pictures of fire engines and helicopters as part of a whole school display to say thanks to all the people helping to extinguish the fires. These were put up on our school fence. Later, when we were back in class we could hear the army trucks and fire engines honking as they went past.

We also made a whole school human sign to say thank you to the helicopter pilots.
Our big excitement was that Richie McCaw was in the helicopter that flew over us and took the picture of us all! We think we look like human sprinkles!
We are so fortunate to have such a strong a dedicated force of firefighters, soldiers, police and volunteers who have been working so hard for the last 5 days to quash the fire and keep us safe. We are so proud of them and of our community that has rallied around those who have been affected by this event.

Writing!

This week we have started writing! We have been focussing on writing the words 'I' and 'am'. We talked about things that we do at home and at school and then wrote about them. Some of the Children would like to share their writing!
