Science by Hannah!

This morning Hannah brought in an orange to show us a floating and sinking experiment! How exciting! This is what we did:

Hannah explained to us that we were going to see what would happen if we put an orange into water, first with the skin on and then we would peel it and see what would happen!

First we put the orange with the peel on into the water... it floated!

Then we peeled the orange and tested it with no skin on, would it sink? Would it float?

It sunk!
Why does this happen??

The unpeeled orange floats because the rind is very porous and filled with tiny pockets of air which help it to float. When you peel the orange you take away all the air pockets that help it to float, so it sinks!

Thank you Hannah for bringing this in to share with us! Do you have an experiment you would like to show us?
